After several unnatural deaths of students in their hostels, IIT Kharagpur said on Monday that it has appointed 10 additional counselors who would interact with students and researchers to assess their mental good.
In addition to existing consultants, they will roam in the new professional campus, engage as friends with students and researchers, and discuss their concerns, Suman Chakraborty, director of the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, told PTI.
“See, no one can read what happens in a young man’s mind, and if a student becomes depressed, it can only be detected when the person concerned contacts a counselor. We have appointed 10 more counselors who will meet students or personally meet personally or personally to assess their mental health.”
The move was found to be hanging from the roof of his hostel room on 20 September, marking the fifth suspected suicide at the Premier Institute this year.
Harshkumar Pandey (27), a resident of Ranchi, was found dead in his room in Bro Ambedkar Hall. He was doing his PhD in Mechanical Engineering.
Chakravarti, who first became the Dean of the Bhalai of the students and introduced the ‘Setu’ mobile app to help the students under mental stress, said, “Overwinking has suffered a part of the younger generation that becomes sore and apprehensive about the possibilities of their exams and career.”

Senior Academic said that a fact-khoj team formed to investigate unnatural deaths in the campus will be found on Monday. A total of five students have died in the institute since January, allegedly hanging themselves.
“In IIT Kharagpur, we recently celebrated World Suicide Prevention Day, to confirm that no one in our community is ever alone in its struggles. Through the initiative like Hope Board of Hope and The Dean of Students of Students of Students, we are committed to building a compassionate ecosystem, which each member of our community said that said,”.
He said that each boarder has a barcode in the door, which can be scanned to reach 24/7 counseling number for immediate help.
“However, given that a frugal student may not be open to share his stress, we are deploying these mobile counselors who will go to students’ rooms, sports clubs and other places of the assembly, and mix with them in a favorable manner. It will also help us to know whether a student is under stress and takes appropriate measures to help the concerned person,” he said.
