The Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief’s comments came after Nitin Gadkari fainted while speaking during an election campaign in Maharashtra’s Pusad on Wednesday. He He said he was feeling “uncomfortable due to the heat”.
In a post on Twitter, Mamata Banerjee said, “Election campaigning in the scorching heat of this brutal summer is truly unbearable. Today is 24th April, and, can you imagine, our 7 phase elections will continue till 1st June ??!!, he tweeted.
Meanwhile, speaking at an election rally, Banerjee asked why the Lok Sabha elections were being held in seven phases amid the scorching heat across the country. He said on Wednesday that the Election Commission is conducting elections in seven phases to help the BJP.
He also alleged that the Lok Sabha election schedule was designed to “satisfy the BJP”, news agency PTI reported. “Earlier, the voting process used to end by May 2 or 3, but this year due to severe weather conditions they have extended it by three months,” Banerjee said while addressing an election rally for TMC’s Bolpur candidate Asit Mal. “
He said, “The Election Commission has planned the elections for three months to satisfy the BJP.” He further stressed that his aim is to “defeat the BJP” in the Lok Sabha elections 2024.
Banerjee also urged people not to waste water as many areas of the state are facing water crisis.
As soon as the Election Commission of India announced the elections to be held on 16 March, many opposition leaders started criticizing the timing of the Lok Sabha elections. It was announced that the Lok Sabha elections would be held from 19 April to 1 June, while counting of votes would take place. Voting will take place on June 4.
Earlier, Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal said the Election Commission was “showing its loyalty to the BJP. They are telling the BJP…that we are conducting elections in seven phases so that the army of campaigners and resources can be deployed for your (BJP) ) have, can use it accordingly,” he said.
