In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Meghraj Ingle, Director and Senior Consultant, Gastroenterology, Gleneagles Hospitals, Parel Mumbai, explained, “Acid reflux is observed when stomach acid moves into a person’s esophagus, causing symptoms such as heartburn. Hence, the backward flow of acid is known as acid reflux. It is a common problem seen in a large number of people. Many people suffer from these issues due to factors such as stress, unhealthy eating habits, sedentary lifestyle, lying down after eating, eating spicy foods, smoking and drinking alcohol, obesity, high caffeine intake or pregnancy.”

According to Dr. Meghraj Ingle, the symptoms of acid reflux are – nausea, chest pain, sore throat, burning sensation, headache, sour taste of acid in the mouth, stomach cramps and pain, persistent cough, shortness of breath and wheezing.

Encouraging lifestyle changes, such as inculcating mindful eating habits in the daily routine, Dr. Meghraj Ingle advised, “One should savor every bite, chew food properly and also recognize hunger cues. Doing so can help keep track of food consumption, which leads to better digestion and also creates a deeper connection with food that can reduce overeating. Remember, overeating causes acid reflux. Probiotics also help control acid reflux. Probiotics and fermented foods restore digestive balance and improve the gut microbiome.”

He suggested, “Opt for yogurt, kimchi or kombucha to ensure smooth gastrointestinal function. Stress is also a cause of acid reflux. Therefore, reducing stress through yoga or meditation can help you prevent acid reflux. Exercise daily, avoid acidic foods like onions, tomatoes and spicy foods, eat small meals, avoid wearing tight clothes, quit smoking and drinking alcohol and do not sleep immediately after eating. Follow these important tips and you will definitely be able to control acid reflux.”

Dr. Meghraj Ingle stressed that people suffering from acid reflux should take the medication prescribed by the doctor. He suggested, “The patient will be advised antacids and proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). Self-medication is not a good idea at all. Histamine 2 (H2) blockers will also be recommended to the patients. The surgical treatment for acid reflux or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is fundoplication. In this, the upper part of the stomach is wrapped around the lower esophagus to prevent the acid from flowing out. This is a promising solution that addresses the root cause of acid reflux.”
