The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Friday, September 20, demanded a government accommodation for outgoing Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, saying “he deserves it” as the convener of a national party. Addressing a press conference, AAP MP Raghav Chadha said the party will write to the concerned ministry for the same.
Outlining the benefits given to national parties under the Election Commission laws, Raghav Chadha said every national party has the right to two facilities, “one office” and “one residence for its convener” to function from Delhi.
He said, “The law says that when a political party becomes a national party, it is given two resources. First, an office in the national capital for work. Second, a government residence for the national convener.”
He said the AAP has become a national party after the Gujarat assembly elections in 2022, in which it got some seats and a good vote percentage.
The AAP MP said, “This is given under the law of the Election Commission, under this law we demand that AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal should get government accommodation.” He expressed hope that the party will not have to fight a legal battle to get government accommodation for the outgoing chief minister.
He said, “We will write a letter to the Centre to provide accommodation to Arvind Kejriwal, hopefully we will not have to fight a legal battle for it. Arvind Kejriwal has decided to resign for the sake of his morals and will move out of his official accommodation. He does not have any property or even a house of his own. As the convener of a national party, he is entitled to a government accommodation. The Centre should provide it to him.”
Arvind Kejriwal, who resigned as Delhi chief minister earlier this week, will move out of the official residence within 15 days, the party had earlier said. Chief ministerial candidate Atishi will take oath on Saturday, September 21.
