Parkinson’s is also a similar disease, but now for the first time, researchers at Tel Aviv University have developed a method to detect the accumulation of proteins in cells, which identifies Parkinson’s disease.

This means that Parkinson’s disease can be detected 15 years before the first symptoms appear, so that treatment can be started in time and in this way this incurable disease can be prevented. Pro. Uri Asheri and Tel Aviv University PhD student Ofir Saade said the researchers focused on two gene mutations that are found in large quantities in Ashkenazi Jews. Under the leadership of Professor Asheri and Saade, researchers from Israeli Medical Centers, Germany and America have made this discovery.

“We hope that in the coming years it will be possible to develop treatment options for family members of Parkinson’s patients who are at risk of developing the disease,” Asheri told The Times of Israel. Using super-resolution microscopy, researchers examined cells from Parkinson’s patients – not from their brains, but from their skin. This study has been published this month in the scientific journal ‘Frontiers in Molecular Neuroscience’.

The incidence of Parkinson’s has doubled in the last 25 years. About 8.5 million people worldwide suffer from the disease and 1,200 new victims are identified every year in Israel. Ashery said Parkinson’s actually results from the destruction of dopamine-producing neurons in the substantia nigra area of ​​the midbrain.

By the time Parkinson’s symptoms related to body movements appear, 50 to 80% of the dopaminergic neurons have already died, and there is no way to regenerate them. Therefore, its treatment today is “very limited”. Asheri said this happens because the patient is already in the “advanced stage of the disease”.
