How she brought sustainably sourced Indian ingredients to a holistic beauty solution
Elizabeth Isaac, Founder and Managing Director of Gunam Beauty, explains how Indian beauty techniques were brought to the forefront after her own experiences. Elizabeth says, “As a teenager, I constantly struggled with my acne-prone skin and hoped it would go away with age. Somehow, traditionally prescribed acne medication never really worked for me. Didn’t work and I also suffered serious side effects from oral antibiotics and isotretinoin.” She realized that a holistic approach was needed to keep her skin under control as her skin barrier had been compromised as a result of years of using harsh and drying treatments. During the COVID-19 lockdown, Elizabeth went back home to Kerala for a few months and laid the foundation of her dream.
“Gunum was founded with the idea of bringing together sustainably sourced Indian ingredients like neem, vetiver, turmeric, ashwagandha and sea buckthorn, rose, frankincense and black cumin seed oils with roots in Ayurveda and French formulation expertise. An important part of the journey to success was to ensure that the materials were sustainable. She shares example, “The Khasbeej we use is cultivated on the coast of the Bay of Bengal in Pondicherry, which helps in improving the amount of nitrogen and micronutrients found in these coastal areas in the soil. “Rejuvenates the sandy soil. Solar panels are used to pump water for farming, and the use of chemical fertilizers is reduced by using compost made from locally available seaweed.”
