Actor Ashutosh Rana reveals he was disappointed when writer Mahesh Bhatt signed someone else for the role of Lajja Shankar Pandey conflict (1999). The psychological thriller, which turns 25 this year, remains one of the high points in the famous actor’s filmography.
“I was shooting in Hyderabad. I left it and ran to Mumbai to meet Bhatt sir. I asked him how can he sign someone else? Either he should audition me and then reject me. should give, or simply say that I have not done justice to Enemy (nineteen ninety eight). “I wouldn’t let anyone else do this role,” Rana told us.
He adds, “Bhatt sir laughed and said that since he had not met me for a long time, he was playing around. Because if it wasn’t for him I would never have come. This role was written for me.”
Lajja Shankar was a religious fanatic who believed in barbaric methods to achieve immortality. The audience remembers Rana for his shocking portrayal, who revealed that the terrifying cry was added to his character. Rana says, “The look and mannerisms were collectively designed by Bhatt sir, Tanuja (Chandra, director) and me. Bhatt sir wanted a signature for the character. It may be a catchphrase, but I don’t like catchphrases. I don’t believe.” He further added, “Such a scream drives away evil spirits. I thought for Lajja Shankar, every spirit is evil that comes in the way of his intentions. Whenever he is under pressure, he screams. I called it The shot was done without any rehearsal. It had such an impact.”
According to Rana, conflict It was not a mainstream film when it was released. But he is happy that the genre has found more takers in the last 25 years. Describing it as “one of the best films”, he shared, “The conviction to take risks at that time is worth appreciating today.”
While many people believe conflict inspired by the silence of the Lambs (1991), Rana believes that despite what fans may believe, his character sets it apart.
So how does he view the film today? Rana concluded by saying, “Very few things in life have such a long journey. Every actor wishes to have at least one such film across generations. If a film stays in your memory for so long, then It’s a blessing for any actor.”
