The country’s capital Delhi is now being called the pollution capital. In Delhi and surrounding areas of Noida, Ghaziabad, Greater Noida, Gurugram and Faridabad, collectively known as NCR, pollution levels have consistently remained between 300-400 and sometimes even higher. For the last one month, Delhiites have been struggling with various pollution related problems. In response, the Delhi government shifted classes up to class five to online mode for a week.
However, with no updated orders from the Delhi government, schools switched to hybrid mode, allowing students to attend classes in person or study from home. Despite pollution levels remaining unchanged, restrictions under GRAP 3 have been lifted, causing confusion about school schedules.
Pollution in Delhi has caused common problems like eye irritation, headache, cold, cough, stomach ache and vomiting in both children and adults. Doctors have warned that Delhi’s pollution is having a significant impact on mental health.
Many schools have informed parents about the resumption of regular classes on Monday. From December 1, 2025, children up to class 5 will attend in-person classes, and the hybrid mode will remain suspended until further notice.
Delhi pollution in ‘very bad’ category
Recent visuals shared by ANI from Anand Vihar and Dhaula Kuan show a thick layer of smog over the city. Delhi has spent more than 15 days this month in the ‘very poor’ category as November’s air quality worsens every day. This situation has arisen after pollution levels have increased in Delhi for several weeks since Diwali. On Thursday, the daily bulletin of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) recorded the city’s 24-hour average AQI of 377 at 4 pm. By 8 pm, the AQI had reached 381, firmly in the “very poor” category.
Guidelines for children
It may not be possible to miss school for an extended period of time, but self-care is important during this harsh season. Children should wear N95 masks in school to protect themselves from pollution. Schools may also suspend outdoor activities for longer periods, keeping children indoors to avoid exposure to outdoor air. If your child experiences any health problem, consult a doctor immediately.
