power of cumin water
The primary benefit of jeera water lies in its ability to optimize the digestive system, and highlighting this, Dr. Chaturvedi said, “Jeera water offers many health benefits, especially for digestion, as it stimulates digestive enzymes and helps reduce gas, bloating, acidity and indigestion while improving overall digestive functioning.”
The dietitian also said that cumin water can provide assistance for those on their weight loss journey. Although it is not a magic pill, he said: “It can aid weight management by slightly boosting metabolism and improving fat breakdown, contributing to gradual weight loss when combined with proper diet and exercise.,
Apart from digestion and weight control, cumin also holds important benefits for long-term health management. Sharing the benefits of including cumin water in daily routine, Dr Chaturvedi said, “Cumin is known to help control blood sugar as its natural compounds can improve insulin sensitivity and reduce blood sugar levels, making it useful for individuals with early diabetes or insulin resistance. Being rich in antioxidants, especially polyphenols, cumin helps reduce inflammation and protects cells from damage. It may also support iron levels because cumin contains iron, which may be helpful for people with mild deficiency, although it should not take the place of medical supplements. Additionally, some studies show that cumin may mildly lower cholesterol by reducing LDL (bad cholesterol) and triglycerides.

Are there any side effects of drinking cumin water?
Despite the plethora of benefits, Dr. Chaturvedi points out that cumin water is not without risks, especially for certain individuals or when consumed in large quantities. They warned that cumin water could have harmful effects in some situations: “It may lower blood sugar too much, especially in people taking diabetes medication, potentially leading to hypoglycemia. In some individuals, cumin may increase stomach acid and worsen heartburn or pain related to acidity, GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), or ulcers.
He adds, “Excessive consumption in large amounts or over prolonged periods of time, especially concentrated extracts, has been linked to kidney stress and mild liver toxicity, although normal household amounts are generally safe. Traditional medicine also states that excessive consumption of cumin can stimulate the uterus, so concentrated medicinal doses should be avoided during pregnancy, even if normal food amounts are safe. Because it enhances digestion, consuming too much cumin water may cause diarrhea or stomach cramps.
What is the safe way to drink cumin water?
For most people, Dr. Chaturvedi said the safe way to consume cumin water is to boil half to one teaspoon of cumin seeds in water once a day. However, he reiterated that some people should be cautious and should ideally consult a doctor before making cumin water a regular part of their diet. ,People who should be cautious include pregnant women, diabetic patients taking medication, individuals with gastric ulcers or severe acidity and patients with kidney or liver disease,” said Dr Chaturvedi.
