According to a report published in Science Daily A group of researchers from Keck Medicine at the University of Southern California looked at the effects of PCE on liver health. They found that people exposed to this chemical were three times more likely to develop severe liver fibrosis than other people.
In addition to dry cleaning materials, household items in which PCE is commonly found are adhesive glues, spot removers, and stainless steel polishes.
,The findings show that exposure to PCE may cause a person to develop liver disease, whereas someone with the same health and demographic profile may not,” said Dr. said hepatologist Brian P. Lee of Keck Medicine, who was also lead author of the study.
Fibrosis causes scar tissue to develop in the liver. This can lead to serious conditions like cancer or even liver failure.
PCE is a colorless liquid used in dry-cleaning to remove grease from clothing. It is also part of the cleaning materials used for utensils in homes. People are exposed to it when it evaporates from clothing treated with this material. Being a part of household items, there is a risk of it getting mixed with water and soil.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer has already considered this substance a ‘probable carcinogen’. The US Environmental Protection Agency has already initiated the phaseout of this chemical from various cleaning products.

Other causes of liver cancer
According to the NHS website, a person’s chance of getting liver cancer increases if the person is male, over the age of 60 and already has conditions such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, gallstones, diabetes or liver parasites. If a person’s siblings or parents have had liver cancer, the chances of that person getting this disease increases.
The way to prevent liver cancer is to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Avoiding alcohol, smoking and weight gain can go a long way in preventing cancer.
