There are many people around the world who think that sunscreen is only for the beach or mountain trips. This essential skin care product is not for everyday use. As it happens, applying sunscreen daily plays an important role in preventing signs of premature aging such as wrinkles, sunburns and sagging skin. These are available in a variety of forms, including creams, lotions, gels, sticks, sprays, and even lip balms. Regular use of sunscreen also helps reduce the risk of skin cancer and other sun-related skin reactions. Although its importance cannot be underestimated, sunscreen is surrounded by a lot of myths and misconceptions.

Dr Karuna Malhotra, cosmetologist and beauty therapist, founder of Cosmetic Skin & Homeo Clinic, debunks some sunscreen myths in an interview with HT Shop Now.

Myth 1 – The higher the SPF, the better the protection

fact – A higher sun protection factor (SPF) provides greater protection against UVB rays. But it’s important to remember that SPF only measures protection against UVB radiation, not UVA. Dr. Malhotra explains, “Ultraviolet A rays can also damage the skin and increase the risk of skin cancer. Therefore, it is best to choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB radiation.”

Myth 2 – Dark skin people don’t need sunscreen

fact – Some people may think that people with darker skin do not need to use sunscreen. This is so that the melanin can diffuse UVB rays and protect against sunburn to some extent. But here’s the truth: “Despite having more UV protection, people with darker skin should still apply full spectrum sunscreen. “Melanin does not effectively resist UVA damage, which can lead to early skin aging and wrinkles,” says Dr. Malhotra. “Furthermore, melanin will not protect the skin from prolonged exposure to the sun without protection,” she says.

Myth 3 – You can skip sunscreen on cloudy days

fact- Sun damage can occur even on cloudy days. “Up to 80% of UV radiation can still reach your skin through light clouds on overcast days. So, no matter the season, it’s important to apply sunscreen every day,” says Dr. Malhotra.

Myth 4 – Sunscreen does not need to be reapplied

Many individuals believe that one application of sunscreen will provide all-day protection. But Dr. Malhotra clarifies, “Sunscreen quickly loses its effectiveness as it degrades in light. Therefore, it should be reapplied at least every two to four hours.”

Myth 5 – Sunscreen is waterproof

fact- ,No sunscreen is 100 percent water resistant,, says Dr. Malhotra. ,Even though some sunscreens, such as those advertised as sweat- or water-resistant or sunscreens for athletes, may be water-resistant, it is still necessary to reapply after swimming or sweating,” she says.

Here’s a tip: Before entering the water, allow at least 10 to 15 minutes for the sunscreen to absorb into the skin.

Myth 6- You don’t need sunscreen in winter

fact-Many people believe that sunscreen is only for summer, but this is a big misconception. The doctor explains: “Even in winter, up to 80% of sunlight UV rays can penetrate clouds and fog, causing tanning, pigmentation, and premature aging. Cold weather may make you feel protected, but your skin still needs daily SPF, especially during outdoor activities or when near reflective surfaces like snow or glass.

If people are aware of the facts behind these misconceptions, they can use sunscreen more efficiently. “Although sunscreen can dramatically reduce the risk of skin cancer and reduce skin damage, it cannot provide complete protection. To further reduce your risk, seek shade, wear protective clothing and stay away from high solar hours.
