According to the US Geological Survey, its intensity was 6.8, after which there was a stir on the beaches and a tsunami warning was issued for Iwate Prefecture. This earthquake occurred in the sea near Iwate at 5:03 pm local time. After this, the Japan Meteorological Department has warned that this earthquake can cause tsunami waves up to one meter (about three feet) high.
The administration has appealed to the people to stay away from coastal areas, because tsunami waves can reach immediately. Japan’s national broadcaster NHK said that small tsunami waves have already been recorded in the sea. Although the sea appeared relatively calm in the initial live video, later the fear of increasing waves started increasing.
This area is considered extremely sensitive to earthquakes, because the devastating earthquake and tsunami of 9.0 magnitude in 2011 had caused huge devastation here. About 18,500 people were killed or missing in that accident and there was a serious radiation risk at the Fukushima nuclear plant. It was called the biggest disaster in Japan after World War II.
