Sulakshana Pandit Love Story: It is about that time when a singer became a new actress. Got a chance to work with a superstar and the story started from there. She fell in love with me in the first meeting itself. There was a different sparkle in her eyes and she followed that sparkle as if Meera was crazy only about Shyam. But this love proved to be one-sided. Call it love or coincidence… the day that superstar left the world. On the same day this beauty also breathed her last.
New Delhi. She was the queen of tunes, listening to whose voice the radio kept on rocking for years. When she became a heroine in films, the innocence of her face won millions of hearts. But in real life, her heart got attached to someone who never looked back. He waited, had hopes, but the answer he got was ‘I don’t love you…’ This one line changed his world. After that, there were no films, no songs, only a lonely life remained, in which she kept worshiping the same incomplete love. With time she herself became a Meera, who dedicated every breath to the memory of her ‘Krishna’. What can we call this if not a wonderful story of strange love? 40 years ago, on the same day that man died, she too said goodbye to the world. It was none other than Sulakshana Pandit, who loved Sanjeev Kumar deeply.
Singer and actress Sulakshana Pandit, who touched the soul with her voice for ages and ruled the hearts of the audience with her acting on screen, breathed her last on 6 November. She was 71 years old and was ill for a long time. His brother and renowned musician Lalit Pandit told Mid-Day that he died of cardiac arrest.
Sulakshana Pandit was born on July 12, 1954 in Raigarh, Chhattisgarh. His family holds an important place in the world of music. She was the sister of the famous music composer duo Jatin-Lalit and the niece of classical music legend Pandit Jasraj. Thus, music was in his blood and he entered the world of singing at the age of just nine.
Sulakshana started her playback singing career with the 1967 film ‘Taqdeer’. Surprisingly, the first song of his career was Swar Kokila with Lata Mangeshkar. He sang the duet ‘Saat Samandar Paar Se’ with Lata ji. After this his melodious voice soon attracted everyone’s attention. The song ‘Tu Hi Sagar Hai Tu Hi Kinara’ from the film ‘Sankalp’ (1975) became his identity and this song is still alive in the hearts of people.
Along with singing, Sulakshana also proved her mettle in the field of acting. He started his acting career with the 1975 film ‘Uljhan’, in which he shared the screen with Sanjeev Kumar. The audience liked their pairing in the film a lot. After this, she appeared in films like ‘Bandal Baaz’ with Rajesh Khanna, ‘Hera Pheri’ with Vinod Khanna, ‘Waqt Ki Deewar’ with Jitendra and Sanjeev Kumar. He also worked with Shashi Kapoor in films like ‘Salakhen’, ‘Phansi’ and ‘Amar Shakti’.
During the film ‘Uljhan’, Sulakshana fell in love with Sanjeev Kumar and started loving him deeply. However, Sanjeev Kumar refused to marry her. When she told the condition of her heart to the actor, he clearly said that I do not love you… This shook Sulakshana to the core. However, Sulakshana, crazy in love, continued to love him in her heart. But, Sanjeev Kumar’s sudden demise in 1985 broke him completely.
It is said that after this painful incident, Sulakshana never married and gradually distanced herself from the film world. She went into complete solitude and started staying away from public life. After a hip fracture and surgery in 2005, she became more obscure.
Sulakshana’s love for Sanjeev was like Meera’s devotion. Just as Meera left everything for Krishna, similarly Sulakshana listened to the voice of her heart. She continued to love Sanjeev till her last breath, even though that love remained incomplete. His songs and films still tell the story of his passion. Lalit Pandit said, ‘Didi’s voice will always be alive.’ Sulakshana’s passing is the end of an era.
