In a speech before beginning his eighth term, Paul Biya, 92, promised to restore order in the Central African nation and blamed irresponsible politicians and the diaspora for stoking unrest. Biya told the people of the country, ‘As I assume office, I fully realize the seriousness of the situation that our country is going through. I realize the number and gravity of the challenges we face. I feel the depth of disappointments, and the scale of expectations’.
48 civilians killed
According to Reuters, security forces killed 48 civilians during protests against Biya’s re-election. The government has not responded to requests for comment, nor has it provided any estimates of those killed or injured during the unrest.
According to official results, Biya was declared the winner of last week’s election by a comfortable margin with 53.66% of the votes, while opposition leader Issa Tchiroma Bakri received 35.19%. This new tenure of his can keep him in power till the age of almost 100 years.

In 2008, he abolished the presidential term limits and announced that he could contest the presidential election as many times as he wanted.
