Emotional Manipulation in Relationships: A relationship is strong only when there is equality, trust and emotional support. But sometimes this relationship gradually starts leaning towards one side. In the beginning, overcaring for your partner or showing interest in everything seems like love, but when this behavior starts dominating your freedom and thinking, then understand that the matter has now reached emotional controlling.

Emotional controlling is a situation when a person tries to manipulate you, that too in the name of love or care. Such a partner uses your emotions for his own benefit. He wants you to obey him, and makes you feel guilty when you don’t. Gradually this pattern starts affecting your thinking and confidence.

How to recognize that your partner is emotionally controlling- If your partner wants to control everything, like who you talk to, what you wear, where you go, then this is the first sign. Second, if he blames you at every disagreement or says “You don’t love me,” this is emotional blackmail. Third, he ignores your feelings and calls you “overreact.” Fourth, he tries to isolate you from friends and family so that you become completely dependent on him.

Why does mental stress increase? By living in such relationships, a person gradually starts losing his self-respect. Due to constant control you are unable to trust yourself. Your thinking starts becoming limited and you start feeling fear before every decision. This kind of emotional pressure can later cause problems like anxiety and depression.

Recognize that this is not love, this is control! The first step is to accept the truth. Ask yourself honestly, are you happy in this relationship or simply living with fear and guilt? True love makes you feel secure, whereas a controlling relationship makes you weak.

Set your limits- Learn to say ‘no’. It is not necessary to obey your partner’s wishes every time. If certain things bother you, express them clearly and respectfully. Setting your limits in a relationship is a healthy habit.

Talk to someone you trust! If you feel that things are getting out of hand, then do not remain silent. Talk to a trusted friend, family member or counselor. Outside opinion often helps to see the situation clearly.

Learn to take care of yourself- Losing your identity while being in a relationship is the biggest mistake. Take time for yourself, do things you love, and seek professional help if needed. Remember, love is true only when it gives you freedom and does not control your emotions. True relationship makes you stronger, not breaks you.
