Police sub-inspector Gopal Badane, one of the accused in the alleged suicide of a female doctor in Maharashtra’s Satara district, has been arrested. Earlier on Saturday, another accused, Prashant Bankar, a software engineer, was arrested in the abetment of suicide case. The female doctor has named two people in her suicide note.
Satara SP Tushar Doshi said PSI Gopal Badane was arrested after he landed at Phaltan rural police station and surrendered.
Prashant Bankar, accused of mentally harassing the victim and abetting her suicide, was produced before the Satara district court, which sent him to four-day police custody.
The doctor, a resident of Beed district in the Marathwada region of central Maharashtra and posted at a government hospital in Satara district, was found hanging in a hotel room in Phaltan town on Thursday night.
In her suicide note, which she wrote on her palm, the doctor alleged that PSI Gopal Badane had raped her multiple times and was mentally harassing her by posing as Prashant. Bunker was the son of the landlord where the doctor was staying.
The note read, “Badne raped me four times. He raped, mentally and physically abused me for more than five months.”
A relative, speaking to a news channel, alleged that she complained several times about the harassment, but her complaints were ignored. Another relative claimed that the victim was pressured to change the medical reports at the sub-district hospital where she worked.
“Political people in Phaltan often asked her to change the medical reports as she was regularly on autopsy duty. She had complained several times against the PSI (named in the note), but her complaints were ignored,” the relative said.
Meanwhile, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Ambadas Danve accused former BJP MP Ranjitsinh Naik Nimbalkar of pressurizing a woman doctor on an occasion in the past. Speaking to reporters, Danve claimed that two of Nimbalkar’s personal assistants had once pressurized him to declare a fit accused (brought to the government hospital for medical examination after arrest) as unfit and vice versa, with the help of calls between him and the woman doctor.
Nimbalkar, in his response, said that there was no truth in the allegation and his name was being deliberately dragged into the case.
