Darbhanga: The traditional painting of Mithila has now moved away from walls and clothes and has reached the items of worship. A new story of Mithila painting is being written in Darbhanga district. Where local artists are decorating soup, coconut and other worship materials with their art for the festival of Chhath. The demand for these unique products is now increasing rapidly not only in Bihar but also in many other states of the country.
Kriti Kumari, founder of Mithila Kriti Hub, says that she has been working in this field since 2016. Leading this new initiative. She says that in view of Diwali and Chhath festival, she is getting bumper orders for soup, dagra, coconut and decorative elephants decorated with Mithila painting. Kriti Kumari says that we experiment something new every year. Earlier this art was limited only to walls or sarees, but now by carving it on small items, artists are easily earning Rs 100 to 200 per item.
The specialty is painting waterproof
The biggest feature of these products is that the painting done on them is waterproof. Kriti tells that the soup with Mithila painting can be used in Chhath Puja. Also, after the festival, it can be decorated in the house as wall decoration, which does not spoil for two to four years.
The popularity of this art can be gauged from the fact that a large number of orders are coming from cities like Chhattisgarh, Patna, Gaya, Raxaul, Jamshedpur and Delhi. Their prices have been fixed according to the detail of the work. A painted coconut costs Rs 150, while a decorated elephant is available for Rs 250. This new experiment is not only giving a new identity to Mithila art, but is also creating employment opportunities for local artists.
