Diwali arrives, and Indian homes become filled with sweets, snacks and chocolates during the five-day celebration, as people exchange gifts and families prepare feasts for everyone to enjoy. Some of the most common Indian sweets and desserts found in homes are laddus, chocolate boxes, soan papdi and barfi.

In an Instagram post shared on October 15, cardiologist and functional medicine specialist Dr. Alok Chopra, MD, MBBS, listed some common Diwali sweets and desserts that you should avoid, and provided healthy alternatives for each dish. Let us know what the doctor suggested.

Which Indian sweets to choose and skip this Diwali?

Sharing the list of Indian sweets you should give up and which you should pick up, Dr. Alok Chopra wrote, “This Diwali, redefine indulgence. Health isn’t about curtailing indulgence – it’s about choosing better indulgence. From A2 ghee laddus to antioxidant hampers, let your celebrations reflect true abundance inside and out.”

This Diwali, try these tips from a cardiologist:

1. Boondi laddu from the market vs. Homemade gram flour laddu

Instead of market-available boondi laddus, which are made of refined sugar, cheap oils and synthetic colors (one kg laddu contains around 700 grams of sugar), choose homemade gram flour laddus made with A2 ghee and organic jaggery.

2. Packaged Soan Papdi or Burfi Boxes vs. Pistachios and Gulab Coconut Pieces

Every year, during Diwali, every Indian family gets at least one box of soan papdi or barfi, and these sweets are loaded with refined sugar. Therefore, cardiologists suggest enjoying dates puree with pistachios and pink coconut pieces instead of these Indian sweets.

3. Deep-Fried Salted Versus Roasted Nut and Seed Mix

When you entertain guests at your home during Diwali festivities, you might be tempted to serve them namkeens, which are deep-fried and loaded with preservatives. So, instead, the cardiologist suggests trying a serving of a mixture of roasted walnuts and seeds.

4. Fancy Gift Hampers vs. Curated Wellness Baskets

For Diwali gifts, we often choose fancy gift hampers that include wafers, chocolates and packaged sweets, and these are not healthy options. So, Dr. Chopra suggests creating a wellness basket made of blueberries, avocado, dragon fruit and dark chocolate (85%) instead.
