First of all know what is scrap policy?
Under the scrap policy, you can get old vehicles like cars, bikes, scooters and all types of commercial vehicles scrapped. If your car is 10 years (diesel) or 15 years (petrol) old then you can avail the benefit of scrap policy. The Central Government has made it mandatory to scrap unfit vehicles under the Vehicle Scrappage Policy. Under this policy, old and unfit vehicles that are causing pollution and harm to the environment are scrapped. All types of old commercial and public transport vehicles which have attained the age of 15 and 20 years will also go to scrap after failing the fitness test.

Scrappage Policy in India: Old vehicles consume more fuel than new vehicles.
Objective of Scrappage Policy
Vehicle scrappage policy was announced by PM Narendra Modi in the year 2021. The objective of the scrappage policy is to reduce pollution levels along with promoting the country’s automotive and manufacturing industry. This policy is necessary for those who have their own car or bike. The Central Government had announced to implement this policy in the entire country in the General Budget 2021-22. Under this policy, people will not be able to use 15 year old petrol and 10 year old vehicles. If any person is caught using such vehicles, the vehicle will be confiscated along with the challan and will be sent to scrap.
It is mandatory to give fitness test
Under this policy of the Central Government, fitness test of old vehicles is mandatory, only after which these cars will be able to run on the road. If your car does not pass the fitness test then you cannot take it on the road. You can get subsidy by depositing such vehicles in a registered scrap facility. Under the scrappage policy, the pollution level is also reduced and fuel efficiency is also saved. Older vehicles consume more fuel than new vehicles.

To what extent is this policy being implemented?
According to Delhi Statistics Handbook 2023, this policy is now being implemented rapidly. In Delhi, about 55 lakh old vehicles which have completed their life by 2023 have been de-registered, that is, these vehicles are not allowed to run on the road. More than 1 lakh 35 thousand vehicles have been sent for scrap.
Now customers benefit from scrap policy
The government has also given some benefits to the customers following the policy. If a person gets his old car scrapped, he will get some money. This money will not be received in cash but will be given as some discount on purchasing a new car. This discount can be up to 4 percent of the price of the new vehicle. Suppose you are buying a car worth Rs 10 lakh, then you will get a discount of up to Rs 40,000 only under the scrap policy. This discount is different from offers and other discounts. However, the discount will also depend on the condition of your old car.
