In audio recording, Sheikh Hasina is allegedly being heard instructing a senior officer to use fatal force on protesters. She is saying that the security personnel should be shot, ‘wherever they (protesters) are found.’
The order was reportedly given on 18 July 2024, when Sheikh Hasina was at Ganbhavan in her official residence Dhaka. A few hours later, on the orders of Sheikh Hasina, the authorities used military-grade weapons in the capital. The BBC claimed this after reviewing the documents.
The United Nations estimates that more than 1,400 people were killed during protests against the controversial quota policy in jobs. The violence in Bangladesh continued till July and August 2024. Due to these incidents, Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League government collapsed. She left the country on 5 August 2024 and has been living in India since then.
The Bangladeshi government has sent a request for the formal extradition of Sheikh Hasina. Sheikh Hasina is now facing allegations in a special tribunal in Bangladesh, where prosecutors intend to present the audio as primary evidence in the case. He is accused of ordering mass violence during unrest.
In his first public statement after leaving the country, Sheikh Hasina refused to order any force. Nevertheless, the leak audio is considered important in establishing their direct participation in the action on behalf of investigators. The Awami League spokesperson dismissed the allegations and said that there is no illegal order or ratioless action in the audio.
