A Bengaluru man’s so-called “risky hack” has shaken the online debate to reduce auto-rickshaw fare on ride-having apps. In an anonymous redit post, the man claimed that his method is the “last” method he called the city’s “auto mafia”. To deal with high prices in a particular area, the user suggested repeated booking and cancellation of auto without the intention of taking the ride.
“If you see excessive prices for auto, just keep booking and cancel them as soon as they reach around you. For your safety, keep the pick-up location away from 1-2 minutes,” he wrote.
He further claimed that this strategy manipulates the pricing algorithm of the app.
“Just keep booking and canceling them as soon as they reach the surrounding area. With sufficient auto in your surrounding area, the demand falls automatically,” read the post.
According to him, using this trick in 30 minutes helped them to reduce the fare On 180 120.
The post has divided Rai on social media, some have called the move unethical and others praise it as a clever work -chant to defeat the bloated rent. Another user shared the Redit post on X, in which the strategy was called “wrong on so many levels”, which attracted sharp reactions from users criticizing the resident of Bengaluru. However, many others supported the method, describing it as a way to push it back against “overcharging”.
A user wrote, “You have wasted 30 minutes and energy to save 60 rupees? If you have to do such petty accessories to book an auto, it’s probably time to switch on the bicycle,” a user wrote.
Another indicated the potential results: “As long as I wait until Uber/Rapido, blocks your account to do so. They can detect misuse of cancellation.”
Others indicated flaws in repeated booking and cancellation. “They would eventually charge to cancel several times because it happened to me. Or if you do much often they will ban you,” one of them said.
“This is a dangerous game, but I think this karma can return to all auto people,” one of them said.
“The auto needs to feel that if they plan to play the system in their favor, the customer can do the same,” another said.
