The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (Morth) has announced that anti-lock brake (ABS) will be mandatory on all two-wheelers from April 1, 2026. The move aims to make two-wheelers, including motorcycles and scooters, which are safe despite displacement. Previously, only two-wheelers with engine capacity more than 125 cc were made mandatory for ABS. However, the new regulation will now also include entry-level models. But why is ABS important? Anti-lock brake: What is this?
Anti-lock brake is a safety feature that ensures that the wheels do not close during braking. It is particularly effective in emergency conditions and on slippery surfaces. The ABS unit is associated with front brake mechanism (and rear brake on high displacement models) and uses sensors to monitor the speed of the wheel.

The sensors then use the ECU to control the brake pressure by applying brakes in the spirt. As a result, the wheels do not lock, preventing the vehicle from skiding. This allows for more controlled braking and a small restriction distance.
Anti-lock brake is an important safety facility that helps improve overall vehicle stability and control, and has been a major contributor to improve road safety on two-wheelers as well as cars.
Better security with ABS
Apart from ABS for all two-wheelers, there will be a major contributor for improving road safety in India. So far, two-wheelers under 125 cc get a combing-bracing system (CBS) as standard, which applies both front and back brakes to ensure better balance. However, the new mandate will require all new two-wheelers to feature ABS as a standard fitment starting from April 1 next year. Meanwhile, existing two-wheelers will require ABS as standard from October 1, 2026.
Selected manufacturers have started offering ABS as an alternative on their 125 cc motorcycles. Currently, Hero Xtreme 125R is the most accessible motorcycle to get anti-lock brakes in India. The anti-lock brake was first made mandatory in India with an impact from 125 cc and above 1 April 2018 in India.
Road safety increased with ABS
Two-wheeler accidents in all road accidents in India are around 44 percent. Data suggests that about 45 percent of the two-wheelers sold are less than 125 cc. He said, apart from ABS, it will add a significant cost to two-wheelers of the entry-level. Prices expect 5,000-7,000, based on model. Nevertheless, this is a step in the right direction and it should help reduce two-wheeler accidents and ambience in the country.
