ANI said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday faced the decision of Central Secondary Education (CBSE) to set up a sugar board in all his affiliated schools. The Prime Minister said during the 122nd episode of his monthly ‘Mann Ki Butt’, “You must have seen blackboards in schools, but now some schools are also being installed sugar boards – not blackboard, not Chinese boards,”.
He said that the purpose of the initiative is to make children aware of their consumption and help them choose healthy options. PM Modi said, “By understanding how much sugar should be consumed and how much sugar is being consumed, children themselves have started choosing healthy options.”
PM Modi further said that the initiative will help the students to increase the habits of healthy lifestyle since childhood, the report has said. “This is a unique effort and its effect will also be very positive. It can prove to be very helpful in increasing the habits of healthy lifestyle from childhood,” he said.
“Many parents have appreciated it and I believe that such an initiative should be taken in offices, canteens and institutions as well. Finally, if there is health, everything is. Fit India is the foundation of a strong India,” said the prime minister.
CBSE introduced ‘Sugar Board’ in schools, which was associated with high sugar consumption, to remove the growing concerns of type 2 diabetes among students. Following the recommendations of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), CBSE has made all affiliated schools mandatory to establish these boards by July 15, 2025.
The initiative is in response to the increasing number of children diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, which is related to excessive sugar intake along with obesity and other health issues, along with the situation historically seen in adults.
The purpose of ‘sugar boards’ is commonly compared to the recommended daily intake, compared to showing sugar content in the snacks and drinks consumed. These boards will provide information about recommended daily sugar intake, popular junk foods and sugar content in beverages, health risk of high sugar consumption and healthy food options.
CBSE said, “In the last decade, there has been a significant increase in type 2 diabetes in children, roughly due to the easy availability of sugars snacks, beverages and processed foods within the school environment.”
associated Schools have also been directed Organizing awareness seminars or workshops for students to promote healthy diet options.
