Causes of photodermatitis

  • In contact with sunlight or tanning beds
  • Reaction to some drugs, such as antibiotic or diuretic.
  • Reaction of chemicals in cosmetics, perfumes or skin care products.
  • The underlying medical conditions, such as connective tissue disorders, lupus and porphyria.

Prevention tips to manage symptoms of photodermatitis

  • Avoid peak sun hours: Stay out of the sun between 10 am and 4 pm.
  • Wear protective clothes: Long-sleeved shirts, wide-wide hats, and long pants help protect your skin from sun exposure.
  • Use sunscreen: Apply sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and again apply every two hours.
