He was appointed as Director-General of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) on 25 October 2018 in 2018-2019. However, he remained in this post only 8 months. On 16 June 2019, Lieutenant General Faiz Hameed was appointed as Director General in his place. On 29 November 2022, he was promoted to the rank of a four-star General in the Pakistani Army and appointed Chief of Army Staff of the Pakistan Army.
