There is a story behind each thread of a handcraft weaving. Today on National Textile Day, designers talk about how textile design has become important for their creative process – and why you should not confuse it with fashion design.
While the two are different aspects, textile designer Ashdeen Lilaola finds out that on this day and age, fashion and clothes are integrated into each other: “I use both to make a harmonious product, not separate items. We use clothes to make fashion; Sometimes fashion motivates the construction of fashion.”
While the designer Ativa Anand sees a clear difference between the two, he tells us that the fabric inspires the way he makes clothes. “During my creative process, I always go back to see why something was developed – which is the way for me,” they explain.
Designer Gautam Gupta agrees with this feeling. “Today, we see textile and fashion designers working for beauty discrimination in each other areas. I make our handloom clothes according to our vision of collection,” they share.
Meanwhile, Anuradha Dhawan emphasizes how the understanding and slow, hosted fashion of clothes. “The resurrection expands textile lifespan, which promotes a permanent approach to consumption and production,” says the designer.

According to designer Vidhi Singhania, textiles and fashion are very close, but are also very diverse, as one focuses on fit, fall and silhouette, while the other focuses on the finishing of the design, pattern and fabric. “As a textile designer, 30 years of my life have gone into creating a handloom product from simple to extraordinary. Someone is trying to contemporary, improve and give it a platform. Therefore, I think I think my passion lies in clothes,” she explains.
