Want to restart the workout after C-section surgery? Doctors say when and how to start

After cesarean surgery (C-section surgery), new mothers need to be careful about re-starting the workout. A C-section surgery is a major operation, and the body usually takes a long time to recover. In an interview with HT lifestyle, Dr. Manjusha Goel, Lead Consultant, Department of Optitude and Gynecology, CK Birla Hospital, Delhi said, “The body undergoes deep surgical intervention, not only at the skin level, but in many internal layers, it is important that they remember every mother. Dr. Manjusha Goyal further explained when and how new mothers can start working:

First 48 hours post-delivery:

In the first 24 hours after surgery, mothers may still feel the effects of spinal anesthesia. Soft legs and hand activities can be initiated to promote circulation. Neck movement can be helpful, especially to combat the tension of the neck from breastfeeding. After 24–48 hours, once the catheter is removed, mothers can try a 5-minute walk within the hospital room or washroom. These small steps help to achieve confidence and promote recovery.

6 weeks discharge:

After being discharged from the hospital, light pelvic floor exercises, gentle stretching (even late), and urinary-holding exercises can be introduced. Breathing exercises and adequate sleep should be preferred, as newborns disrupt normal sleep cycles. 5-10 minutes of walking after meals can help improve circulation and digestion. 6 weeks and beyond:

Once the stitches are checked and approved by the doctor (usually in the 6-week follower), mothers can slowly resume the exercise that strengthens light. Heavy weightlifting and intense workouts such as core exercise or aerobics should be avoided for the first 3-4 months. During this phase, new mothers can focus on stretching, walking, breathing exercise, hydration and sleep.

Gradually progress is important:

By the 4th month, the core may begin to strengthen. Depending on rest and medical advice, aerobic exercises can be introduced after 5 months. It is important not to participate in intensive workouts or dieting. Instead, stability in gentle exercise and self-care can lay a strong base for long-term health.
