New Delhi: As India has intensified efforts to rebuild its global trade strategy, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has been scheduled to hold counseling with representatives of all major export promotion councils on Wednesday, recently to assess the implications of American Tariff Hike and explore the road further in business talks with Washington.
At a meeting to be held in the national capital, a proposed bilateral trade agreement (BTA) is expected to focus on the current status of engagement and emerging challenges facing Indian exporters, due to tightening the regulatory and tariff measures imposed by the US, informed two people about the matter.
According to two people aware of development, the conversation will focus on collecting field-specific inputs and aligning the industry’s reaction with the government’s negotiation status.
The administration of US President Donald Trump adopted a mutual tariff policy and imposed an additional 26% fee on Indian goods, which is effective from April 9, the Indian exporters are demanding immediate clarity and support from the government in major areas such as textiles, engineering goods, chemicals and gems and jewelery. As the US has suppressed business partners to open its markets, the Indian industry is looking for New Delhi for a coordinated response to rapid export competition and to maintain the pace of trade.
“The Council of Ministers will take stock of the concerns raised by the councils and brief them on the figure of India’s engagement with the US,” the first of the two men mentioned above.

According to the recently released report by the Trade Think Tank Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI), India can see the US on the Merchandise Exports after rejecting the high tariff of Trump administration on this year (Cy2025) this year (Cy2025).
The study is estimated to have a 6.4% decline in India’s overall exports in the year 2025, with the brunt of the impact with major areas such as gems and jewelery, marine products, electronics and auto parts.
The other person said, “The issues that come up with the industry will be discussed, and a possible way will also be raised to reduce the impact of mutual tariffs.”
While no announcement is expected immediately after the meeting, the person said that the talks will help shape India’s next move in bilateral discussions. “India is taking a calibrated approach. The idea is to attach creatively and secure a balanced result that helps both economies grow,” the other person said.
All senior officials of the Ministry of Commerce are also expected to attend the meeting, who will serve as a platform for detailed consultation with export bodies in areas.
The Ministry of Commerce is expected to discuss follow -up with specific areas after the April 9 meeting as it prepares for the next formal round of interaction with American trade authorities.
There are several export promotion councils (EPCs) in India that work under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry to promote and support exports in various fields. These include apparel export promotion council, Engineering Export Promotion Council, Mani and Jewelry Export Promotion Council, Electronics and Computer Software Export Promotion Council, and others among others.
