The private lunar lander Peregrine Mission-1, the first American spacecraft to land on the lunar surface since Apollo 17 in 1972, encountered an “anomaly” that experts are trying to resolve. The lander was to land on the moon on 23 February.
Peregrine Mission 1, which flew earlier today, appeared to fly into space as planned, but the US firm Astrobotic, which controlled the launch, said an “anomaly” occurred when the lander landed in a safe place after the propulsion system successfully activated. After successfully separating from United Launch Alliance’s Vulcan rocket, the Peregrine lander began receiving telemetry through the NASA Deep Space Network, Astrobotic said.
The firm further stated that “the avionics systems, including the primary command and data handling units, as well as thermal, propulsion and power controllers, are all operational and functioning as expected.”
“Following successful propulsion system activation, Peregrine entered a safe operational state. Unfortunately, an anomaly then occurred, which prevented the Astrobotic from achieving stable sun-direction orientation. The team is responding in real time as the situation unfolds and will continue to provide updates as more data is obtained and analyzed,” Astrobotic’s statement read.
In addition to five NASA scientific instruments, Peregrine Mission-1 was carrying the remains of several Star Trek cast members and the DNA of three former U.S. presidents: George Washington, Dwight Eisenhower, and John F. Kennedy.

John Thornton, chief executive of Astrobotic, previously said the craft would spend 12 days in transit between Earth and the moon’s orbit, but would spend most of the time waiting while orbiting the moon for “local light conditions” at the team’s landing site. Be right.
