Kat Dennings faced extremely rude comments from casting directors in the 90s. In an interview with People, the 2 Broke Girls star highlighted the huge difference between the climate of the acting industry then and now. The 38-year-old also revealed how she faced body shaming at the age of 12.
Kat Dennings reveals ‘very cruel’ comments she received from casting directors
“At the time I was auditioning and starting to act, it was a very different environment than it is now,” Dennings told the outlet. “There wasn’t a lot of inclusivity at all. It was very harsh. There were a lot of negative reactions and people didn’t back down,” he said.
Dennings, who began her Hollywood career at the age of nine, reported that casting directors would say “very cruel” things to her even though they were “talking about a child.” “It was too crazy to think about. I say, ‘How can someone say that about a little child?’ It’s crazy,” the Shifting Gears star added.
“For example, I was 12. I’d go to an audition and I’d do it, and my manager would call me and I’d say, ‘How did it go?’ And they’d be like, ‘Well, they thought you’re not pretty enough and you’re fat,'” Dennings recalled. However, their criticism could not shake her confidence because her stance on it was “very strong.”
“That was my approach. For some reason, this didn’t break my spirit. I was like, ‘I’ll show them,'” Dennings continued. “I think that’s props to my parents, because they were like, ‘They’re idiots.’ Don’t listen to them. ‘ And I said, ‘They’re the idiots, not me.’ ,
The Friendsgiving star further added that the current climate of the industry is “much softer, kinder” than its “completely crazy” past. “There’s body positivity, there’s inclusivity, there’s representation, and there was none of that before. It was really disgusting,” she shared.
