New Delhi. Some devices are strictly banned in India and if anyone is found with these devices, he will have to face strict punishment. One of the banned devices in India is the Garmin InReach GPS device, which is a satellite communicator. On Thursday, a Scottish passenger named Heather was detained at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport. Actually, a Garmin InReach GPS device banned in India was found nearby. She was on her way to Rishikesh when airport security spotted the device during a routine check and handed it over to the police. This is the second such case when a foreign national has been detained for carrying a GPS device. In December 2024, a Czech national was similarly detained at Goa airport after a Garmin Edge 540 GPS device (a cyclocomputer) was found in his luggage.
Heather recalled the incident on Instagram and warned fellow passengers. He wrote that do not bring Garmin InReach or any satellite communicator to India. He emphasized that such devices are banned in the country. In a video, he also mentioned contacting his embassy for assistance. But he was told that he could not do anything because he was now under Indian legal jurisdiction. He also alleged that he was not even given water during his detention.
Why was the hiker detained?
The Garmin inReach GPS is a satellite communicator. The device has a built-in satellite transmitter and was found to be in violation of the Indian Wireless Telegraphy Act 1933. The law prohibits the possession of wireless telegraphy equipment without a valid license. After facing legal action, the hiker posted on his Instagram account that please do not try to travel to India with Garmin InReach or any other satellite communicator. They are illegal here.
