The study explored how our eyes can become a window into certain mental conditions and the struggles associated with them.

A feeling of paranoia can creep in at random times. The fearful thought of people trying to harm us or perceiving a situation as dangerous can make us feel unsafe. However, a recent study led by Philip Corlett of Yale School of Medicine suggests that paranoid thoughts may be related to the way we view the world. The study suggests that paranoia may be related to our eyes, and not just our brains. Published in the journal Communications Psychology, the study used a simple test of moving dots to understand how people with paranoid thoughts can detect a pattern that does not exist.

“We are really interested in how the brain organizes,” study senior author Philip Corlett, associate professor of psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine, said in a university release. Stalking or other intentional behaviors are what you might think of as experiences happening at a very high level in the brain that one might have to reason and deliberate about. In this study, we can see them in sight, down in the brain, which we think is exciting and interesting – and has implications for how these mechanisms may be relevant to schizophrenia. Study findings:

The study involved a moving point test, and participants were asked which point they thought was the chaser, and the point that was being chased. It was observed that people with paranoid tendencies struggled to identify which point was being pursued, while those with teleological thinking were unable to understand which point was being pursued. While both cases involved misreading, it helped researchers understand how they work through different brain mechanisms.

Vision and mental health:

Currently, diagnosis of mental conditions such as schizophrenia relies heavily on psychiatric evaluation and self-reported symptoms. It was also observed that people who are born blind have a much lower tendency to develop schizophrenia, which supports the results of the study. “Finding these social hallucinations in hindsight makes me wonder whether schizophrenia is something that develops through errors in the way people model the visual world,” said lead author Santiago Castiello. The study further emphasized that the way our eyes look at things, including conflict, can reflect mental states.
