South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol had announced the imposition of martial law in the country on Tuesday, but now his throne is in danger. After huge public protest, the opposition has presented an impeachment motion against him. Impeachment will be initiated against him, after which the path to his ouster from power will be cleared.
After presenting the impeachment motion, South Korea’s main opposition Democratic Party condemned Yoon’s announcement of introducing martial law and called it an anti-national step. Parliament will vote by Saturday on whether President Yoon should be impeached or not. Democratic Party Central Committee member Kim Yong-jin said, we can no longer let democracy collapse. People’s life and safety must be protected. We want to accuse Yun of being a traitor.
Opposition leaders are not only angry with Yoon, they also want action against Minister Kim Yong-hyun and Interior Minister Lee Sang-min. Both the leaders had supported Yu on imposing martial law. After public protest, Yoon canceled the martial law order within 6 hours, and on Wednesday, schools, banks and government offices continued to function normally in the capital Seoul.

Thousands of people gathered on the streets of South Korea even at night.
People took to the streets for arrest
However, the anger against the President is not stopping. People are on the streets across the country and are adamant on the resignation of President Yoon. There are demands to arrest him. People were heard shouting slogans, ‘Arrest Yoon Suk-yeol.’ South Korea’s largest labor group, the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions, has vowed to go on an indefinite strike until the president steps down.
Resignations of Defense Minister, Chief of Staff
On the other hand, South Korea’s Defense Minister Kim Yong-Hyun has resigned from his post, taking the responsibility of imposing martial law. He apologized to the people of the country for spreading confusion and creating trouble. Chief of Staff Chung Jin-suk and National Security Advisor Shin Won-sik have also resigned from their posts. It is not clear whether their resignations will be accepted or not.
How will impeachment work?
After the impeachment bill is passed in Parliament, the approval of two-thirds of the 300-member National Assembly of South Korea will be required. This means that at least 200 votes will have to be obtained and the most important thing is that this voting should take place within 72 hours. If the impeachment is accepted, the President will be immediately suspended from his post, while the Prime Minister will become the acting President.
