New Delhi: Amid the admission process for entry-level classes in Delhi’s private schools that began on Thursday, several institutions in the national capital have listed proximity, neighborhood and distance from the school as key criteria for enrolment.
According to a circular issued by the Directorate of Education, Delhi government, apart from location, schools are also considering other factors such as number of girls, single girls, siblings of existing students and children of single parents.
It said some schools have also listed criteria for Sikh and Christian minorities, economically disadvantaged groups and physically handicapped parents.
Private unaided recognized schools use a point system for the selection process in which specific points are marked for meeting various criteria ranging from 30 to 100.
The admission process for entry-level classes in Delhi’s private schools began on Thursday and many schools saw over 100 registrations on the first day.
Admissions for nursery, kindergarten and class 1 are underway for the 2025-26 academic session in around 1,741 private schools in the city.
Sudha Acharya, principal of ITL School in Dwarka, said, “We received more than 100 registration forms on the first day of admission. Today, the number is a little less than 100.”
Similarly, Rajeev Hasija, principal of Indraprastha School, said, “There were 150 registrations in our school on the first day. Today we received 85 to 90 forms.”
Private schools have been directed to reserve 25 per cent of their seats for students from economically weaker section and disadvantaged group categories and children with disabilities. As per the circular, separate admission lists will be published for these categories.
“Around 120 registrations for nursery were recorded on the first day,” said Kanika Sachdeva Govi, principal of Delhi Public School, Rohini.
According to DoE, the last date for submission of registration forms is December 20 and the first common admission list is scheduled to be published on January 17.
The process has generated significant interest among parents as they race to secure seats in top schools for their children.
