Madhya Pradesh’s current DGP Sudhir Saxena is expected to retire on November 30.

He was appointed IPS in 1988.
The UPSC selection committee met in Delhi on Thursday to discuss the appointment of the new Director General of Police (DGP) for Madhya Pradesh. Among the top contenders is IPS officer Kailash Makwana, who is widely considered the leading candidate.
The current DGP, Sudhir Saxena, is scheduled to retire on November 30, prompting the search for his successor. Kailash Makwana, DG Home Guard Arvind Kumar and EOW DG Ajay Sharma are the three candidates shortlisted for the role.
Makwana’s qualifications and extensive experience make him a strong candidate. Appointed as an IPS officer on August 30, 1988, he holds a Bachelor of Engineering (BE) degree and an MTech from the prestigious IIT. Known for his sharp acumen, he has held various high-profile positions throughout his career.
In 2022, Makwana was appointed as the Director General of the special police establishment Lokayukta. During his tenure, he made headlines for filing corruption cases against an IAS and an IFS officer. After the launch of the Mahakal Lok Corridor, he was transferred to serve as the Chairman of MP Police Housing Corporation, a role he still holds.
Makwana’s career was filled with frequent transfers and he suffered seven postings in just 3.5 years. During Kamal Nath’s tenure as Chief Minister, he faced three transfers in a single year. Despite these challenges, Makwana remains a strong contender for the post of DGP.
Earlier this year, Makwana had appealed to the Madhya Pradesh government to rectify his Annual Confidential Report (ACR), which he claimed had negatively impacted him during his tenure as Director General in the Lokayukta organisation. Reports suggest that Chief Minister Mohan Yadav gave him a perfect score of 10 in his ACR, boosting his candidature for the DGP post.
A final decision on the appointment is expected soon, with Makwana at the forefront.
