As the Election Commission of India (EC) announced the dates for Maharashtra and Jharkhand assembly elections, a senior Congress leader has raised concerns over the reliability of electronic voting machines (EVMs).
Maharashtra Assembly elections will be held in a single phase on November 20 and counting of votes will take place on November 23. Elections in Jharkhand will be held in two phases on November 13 and November 20 and the results will be declared on November 23.
Creating a fresh controversy, Congress leader Rashid Alvi has expressed doubt on EVMs. “If Israel can allegedly target individuals using pagers and walkie-talkies, what does this mean for the security of EVMs?” Alvi asked.
He further suggested that the upcoming elections in Maharashtra and Jharkhand should be conducted using paper ballots instead of EVMs.
Alvi’s statement is significant as it was given on the day when the election schedule for Maharashtra and Jharkhand was announced.
“In Maharashtra, the opposition should press for voting by paper ballot instead of EVMs. Otherwise, in Maharashtra, the BJP government and the Election Commission can do anything. If Israel uses pagers and walkie-talkies to Can kill, then where is the EVM?” He said.

However, refuting the allegations, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar on Tuesday assured that EVMs are 100 percent foolproof.
Speaking to ANI, Kumar said, “The public answers questions by participating in voting. As far as EVMs are concerned, they are 100 per cent foolproof. If they raise questions again today, we will Will tell you again.”
Last week, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh had also submitted a memorandum to the Election Commission on the same issue. Ramesh expressed hope that the organization will take cognizance of this issue and give appropriate instructions.
