There is an old saying that excess of anything is harmful – however, fruits and vegetables are considered healthy foods that are recommended for regular consumption by health experts around the world. But is there such a thing as eating too much fruit? Well, there is.
In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Swati Sandhan, senior dietician, Jupiter Hospital, said, “Before enjoying your favorite fruits in excess, you need to remember that eating too many fruits can be harmful for your health. Too much fruit sugar can lead to health concerns like weight gain, diabetes, pancreas and kidney problems, tooth decay and deficiencies in vitamin B12, calcium, vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids.

Diabetes, weight gain and cardiovascular health:
Fruits contain natural sugars and some contain abundant calories. As a result, eating too much fruit can lead to health problems. Excessive fructose in most fruits can lead to insulin resistance, obesity, and diabetes. This leads to fat build-up, which leads to glucose intolerance and impaired regular bodily function. This may also increase blood pressure and uric acid levels.
Digestive problems:
A fiber-rich diet is essential for proper digestion, but the high fiber content of fruits can be counterproductive when consumed in excess, resulting in indigestion. This can cause diarrhea, bloating, vitamin deficiency and other symptoms.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS):
Excessive fructose intake is often associated with irritable bowel syndrome. Signs and symptoms of IBS include abdominal discomfort, bloating, indigestion, constipation and diarrhea. Eating a low-fructose diet is one of the most effective ways to control this condition.
It is important that we consume fruits on a daily basis – however, we must pay attention to the quantity. “There is no doubt that fruits are healthy but that does not mean that you should eat them in unlimited quantities. Additionally, it is important to consider both the varieties of fruits and their quantity,” said Dr. Swati Sandhan.
