Retinoids, vitamin C, SPF, niacinamide, and so on – there are so many active products on the market that influencers or self-acclaimed beauty experts tell us to use in our daily skin care routine. If you spend even a fraction of your time on the Internet, you know this to be true. However, if not used correctly, these active ingredients can seriously damage your skin layer and cause more harm than good.

Dr. Saru Singh, MBBS – DALM Beauty Consultant and Practitioner, shares tips on how to use these products properly and how often to apply them on the skin. She shared a clip on Instagram and captioned it, “Your skincare schedule. How you use your active ingredients matters as much as the ingredients themselves.

How many times a week should you use skincare actives?

In the video, Dr. Singh explains how often to use active ingredients like retinoids, niacinamide, vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, AHAs, BHAs, peptides, ceramides, and SPF in a week. According to them, retinoids should be used 2-3 times a week during the night, vitamin C should be used every day in the morning, AHA and BHA should be used 2 times a week (preferably during the night), azelaic acid should be used every day. Should be done repeatedly. Day into night, peptides and ceramides can be used every day, and niacinamide can be used 5-6 times a week. Lastly, she said that SPF is very important and should be used every day in your morning routine.

Your perfect guide to using actives –

Retinoids: Start slow – increase to once a week. Use 2-3 times a week at night. To avoid irritation, always apply it with a good moisturizer.

Niacinamide: Although Dr. Saru describes it as active, using it 5-6 times a week is ideal. If your skin becomes sensitive, scale down and focus on repairing the barrier.

vitamin C: Perfect for the morning, but never mix it with retinoids. Always follow SPF for maximum protection. Use it every day in your morning routine.

Azelaic Acid: Can be used every night at bedtime. Use products with 5-10 percent azelaic acid.

hyaluronic acid: Apply daily to damp skin and follow with moisturizer, especially in dry weather.

Aha: Use gentle exfoliation 2-3 times a week, preferably at night. Do not mix it with retinoids to avoid excessive exfoliation.

BHA: Great for unclogging pores – 2 times a week, preferably at night. Combine with soothing ingredients to reduce irritation.

Peptides: Very safe ingredient and can be used every day (both AM and PM). Use 3-4 times a week for collagen boost. Combine with antioxidants for better results.

Ceramides: Daily (AM and PM routine) for barrier repair, especially after active use. Your skin will remain smooth and hydrated. Works for all skin types.

SPF: absolutely necessary. Use it daily for the best anti-aging protection if you’re sensitive – Mineral SPF.
