China’s moon-landing spacesuit was unveiled for the first time at the third Spacesuit Technology Forum in southwest China on Saturday. Photos shared by local media show a white moon-landing spacesuit decorated with red stripes.
The design of the ‘lightweight’ spacesuit was revealed as China said it launched the lunar-landing phase of its manned lunar exploration program, “with plans for a manned lunar landing by 2030.”
“The unveiling of the moon-landing spacesuit marks an achievement of the program, and marks a new stage of the country’s spacesuit technology,” a report shared by China’s State Council Information Office said.
China’s moon-landing spacesuit ‘inspired by ribbon’
“The red stripes on its upper limbs are inspired by the ribbons of the famous ‘flying nymphs’ of Dunhuang art, while the flames on its lower limbs are rocket launches,” Xinhua news reported.
Meanwhile, Zhang Wanxin, director of the spacesuit engineering office, told CCTV. “We chose the ribbon element to convey a feeling of free flow [in microgravity],
In addition, CCTV video news agency reported that the artistic design of the lunar suit is inspired by Chinese cultural elements. Wanxin of the China Astronaut Center said, “Our aim is to send a message of determination [through its design],
Details of China’s moon-landing spacesuit: in video
The spacesuit features “flexible and reliable gloves, a panoramic anti-glare helmet visor, and joints adapted to low-gravity environments”. Its overall design is lightweight and suitable for activities on the lunar surface.
Zhang Wanxin, director of the spacesuit engineering office, told CCTV that the moon-landing unit is designed for lunar exploration, such as walking and working on the lunar surface.
According to the report, the spacesuit is made of protective materials that effectively protect the astronauts from the lunar thermal environment and lunar dust.
It is equipped with a multifunctional, ‘easy to operate’ and integrated control panel. It also has cameras to record close-up and long-distance views.
The China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) released a video on Saturday showing details of China’s moon-landing spacesuit.
2 astronauts chosen as models
“Astronauts Zhai Zhigang and Wang Yaping served as models for the new lunar suits in the video,” local media reported.
Zhai had created history as the first person from China to perform a spacewalk in the Shenzhou-7 mission. Meanwhile, Wang is the first female astronaut to enter China’s space station.
Li Meng of the China Astronaut Research and Training Center reportedly said that the development of the moon-landing spacesuit was started in 2020.
He said their goal is to produce a lightweight, compact, highly reliable and safe lunar suit. “The development has achieved several important technological breakthroughs,” he reportedly said.
