Pakistan raised the Kashmir issue in the United Nations General Assembly on Friday and urged India to start peace talks. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif claimed that New Delhi was “engaged in a massive expansion of its military capabilities” that were essentially deployed against Islamabad.
“Let me say in no uncertain terms, Pakistan will respond most decisively to any Indian aggression, therefore, to ensure durable peace, India must reverse the unilateral and illegal measures taken since 5 August 2019 and “We must enter into peaceful negotiations to resolve the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in accordance with UN security resolutions and the wishes of the Kashmiri people,” he said.
He also accused the other country of “mindlessly” rejecting Pakistani proposals for mutual strategic restraint to govern. He claimed that the Indian leadership had often “threatened to cross the Line of Control and occupy Azad Kashmir”.
Referring to the abrogation of Article 370, Shehbaz Sharif alleged that India has taken unilateral illegal steps since August 5, 2019.
“Instead of moving towards peace, India has retreated from its commitments to implement the Security Council resolutions on Jammu and Kashmir. These resolutions mandate the people of Jammu and Kashmir to exercise their fundamental right to self-determination. From 5 August 2019, India claimed Shehbaz Sharif “took unilateral illegal steps to implement what its leaders sincerely call the final solution for Jammu and Kashmir.”
India has already made it clear after the Pulwama attack in 2019 that it wants normal bilateral relations with Pakistan, and said it is up to them to create a conducive environment free from terrorism and hostility.
Furthermore, India has repeatedly expressed concern over Pakistan’s support to cross-border terrorism and has said that terrorism and talks cannot go together. India has also provided evidence of Pakistan’s support to terrorist groups in various international forums.
