Indian Airlines plane hijacking: About 48 years ago, Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport was known as Palam Airport. At that time, there was only one terminal at IGI Airport, which is now known as Terminal One. At that time, this terminal was known as Palam Airport. This happened on 10 September 1976. An Indian Airlines plane with 83 passengers had taken off from Palam Airport for Mumbai. Some time after takeoff, six young men suddenly stood up one by one. Some of them moved towards the cockpit and some stood at a little distance.
Before anyone could understand anything, two young men managed to enter the cockpit and pointed pistols at the temples of both the pilots of the plane. After this, the young men standing outside the cockpit also took out their weapons and started shouting hijack-hijack. Seeing the pistols in the hands of these young men and hearing about hijacking, there was a panic in the entire plane. Here, the hijackers present in the cockpit ordered Captain BN Reddy and co-pilot RS Yadav to take the plane towards Libya. On which Captain BN Reddy told the hijackers that they only had fuel till Delhi or Jaipur.

The hijackers did not want to land at these two airports
Meanwhile, Captain BN Reddy wanted to ask the hijackers what they wanted. In response to this question, the hijackers just said that do whatever you are told. Captain BN Reddy again reiterated that he did not have fuel to go to Libya, since he was circling in the same area for a long time, so now he did not have enough fuel to go to Mumbai. To go to Libya, he would need fuel as well as air map and ATC control support. At present, he could take this plane only to Delhi or Jaipur airport. But, the hijackers were not ready to land at these two airports.
After listening to Captain BN Reddy, the hijackers ordered both the pilots to go to Karachi airport in Pakistan. Meanwhile, the pilot had sent signals to Delhi ATC about the plane being hijacked and the plane had now moved towards Karachi. After getting permission from Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority, this Indian Airlines plane had landed at Karachi airport. Even after several hours had passed, no demand was made by the hijackers. Meanwhile, the Indian government started pressuring Pakistan to intervene in this matter and rescue the passengers and crew safely.

Pakistan was forced to bow down to India’s pressure
India’s pressure worked and Pakistan agreed to the rescue operation. The responsibility of the rescue operation was given to the Pakistani army. As a part of strategy, there was a delay in fulfilling the demands of the hijackers. At the same time, after reaching Pakistani soil, the hijackers also seemed relaxed. Therefore, they did not register any special protest against this delay. Meanwhile, with a specific purpose, the Pakistani army started entertaining the hijackers. The Pakistani army showed the hijackers a lot of food and sent different drinks to drink. The food and drinks of the Pakistani army started showing their effect after some time.
Actually, the food and drinks sent to the hijackers had sedatives mixed in them, due to which all the hijackers fell unconscious. After this, the Pak Army commandos who were keeping an eye on the hijackers entered the plane and arrested all the hijackers. After the arrest, these hijackers were identified as M Ahsan Rathore, Syed Abdul Hameed Dewani, Abdul Rashid Malik, Syed M Rafiq, Khwaja Ghulam and Ghulam Rasool. All of them were Kashmiri terrorists. After the arrest of the hijackers, the plane was sent to Delhi with all 83 passengers and crew. The hijacked plane reached Delhi safely with all its passengers and crew the next day i.e. on 11 September 1974.

On one side the hijackers were released, on the other side the security officer was punished
Instead of handing over the hijackers to India, Pakistan said that it would keep them in its jail and try them. This move of Pakistan once again gave the impression of conspiracy in its intentions. After a few months, Pakistan released these hijackers on the basis of lack of evidence. Meanwhile, India’s then tourism and civil aviation minister Raj Bahadur ordered a thorough investigation of this hijacking and suspended 11 security officials. However, it still remains a mystery as to what was the motive of the terrorists behind this hijacking and what evil intentions of Pakistan were hidden behind this hijacking.
