New Delhi. The problems of the popular messaging app Telegram are going to increase. Actually, the Indian government is investigating Telegram regarding criminal activities. These include cases like extortion and gambling. A government official has told our partner company Moneycontrol about this.
According to the official, if these cases are confirmed in the results of the investigation, then the government can ban this messaging app. This case has come to light after the arrest of the company’s 39-year-old founder and CEO Pavel Durov in Paris on August 24. He has been arrested regarding the moderation policy of the app. According to reports, he was detained for failing to stop criminal activities on the app.
Telegram may be banned
“The Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) are investigating P2P communication on Telegram,” a government official told Moneycontrol on the condition of anonymity. He said the investigations being conducted by the Home Ministry and MeitY are keeping a special eye on criminal activities such as extortion and gambling. The official did not rule out the possibility of the platform being blocked. He said a decision will be taken based on whatever comes out of the investigation.
50 lakh registered users in India
Telegram has 50 lakh registered users in India. Moneycontrol has sought information from Telegram in this regard. This news will be updated when the company responds.
