City boy Dr Vaibhav Garg, who recently completed his MBBS degree from the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) located in Sector 32, has topped the country with All India Rank 1 in the recently declared National Entrance cum Eligibility Test (NEET) PG examination.
The 23-year-old student has scored 100 percentile and hails from Dhakoli in Zirakpur. He has studied in Chandigarh since the beginning, he studied 10th from St. John’s High School in Sector 26 and 12th from Sri Guru Gobind Singh Collegiate Public School, also in Sector 26. When he appeared for the NEET UG exam in 2018, he got an all India rank of 69.

Talking about what he wants to do now, Garg said that he is eyeing to go to Delhi and pursue MD Medicine from a top college here. The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) is also conducting its exam for PG courses, which will be held around November and he is planning to appear in it too.
He is the first doctor in his family. His father Sanjeev Kumar Garg is an engineer at Haryana Power Generation Corporation Limited and his mother Manju Garg is a teacher at DAV Surajpur School. His elder sister Aditi Garg has also studied engineering like her father and works at Amazon.

He decided to study medicine instead of engineering because of his fascination with the human body. “I was amazed to see the human body when I was studying in Class 9 and then later in higher classes too. It is a wonderful machine created by God and I was eager to know more about it.”
Advising anyone who wants to crack the exam, he said, “The entire fifth year of MBBS should be devoted to preparing for this exam. We also have internships, but some students prefer to start preparing after the internship is over, which puts them at a disadvantage.” When he was doing the internship, he would spend four to five hours a day, although before the exam he would study for up to 12 hours a day. He did not have many hobbies apart from his course work and preparation, although he loved to go for walks to refresh his mind even when the exam was close.
Garg was among the students who were nervous after the last-minute postponement of the NEET PG exam on June 23, but he said he was prepared and was able to perform well.
