This occasion of joy, vibrant traditions and cultural festivities celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna. Apart from stunning ethnic outfits and jewellery, makeup and hairstyles also complete the look. Whether you opt for a dramatic look or a subtle and radiant look, the festival of Janmashtami is all about expressing yourself and embracing your true personal style. Consider these tips to get the perfect look that will make you shine.
The traditional Janmashtami look is often inspired by the divine and celebratory essence of the festival, particularly focusing on the character of Lord Krishna. “To begin with, apply a shimmery or light foundation for a dewy look that sets the base for the rest of the makeup. If you want to accentuate your eyes, gold or bronze eyeshadow can be an apt choice in the inner corner of the eyes. This can be paired with a thin and soft eyeliner and kohl (kajal) to accentuate the eyes. Add a pop of blue or peacock-inspired colours to the eyeshadow to reflect Krishna. For a dramatic look, false eyelashes can also be added,” says Neetu Juneja, founder of a makeup brand. She also suggests adding accessories like decorative bindis that can enhance the overall look – for minimalist designs, small crystal-studded bindis can be considered.
Popular colour palettes include shades of gold and brown, bright reds and pinks that complement traditional attire beautifully. A vibrant shade of lipstick and a hint of soft blush will also liven up the look. “Add a creative twist by experimenting with textures like glitter, using graphic eyeliner designs or combining traditional styles with modern makeup techniques,” suggests makeup artist Sania Aqib Lakdawala.
Adding a creative touch to the hairstyle enhances the entire traditional look of Janmashtami. Fashion and lifestyle influencer Harshita Kamra says, “Making a braid and adding some fresh flowers like jasmine never fails. Hairstyles like updos can be another beautiful option. If you are making a bun, you can decorate it with maang tika and gajra which will look beautiful. To keep the hair open, add headbands or clips that give a festive and traditional touch.”
Complete the whole look with gorgeous mehndi designs inspired by peacock, flute and Krishna’s footprints or add small matki designs (pots) to add more meaning and tradition.
