There are certain foods and drinks that we reheat again and again to reheat and consume. Eating hot foods is good for health, but reheating them can cause harm too. In the viral reel, nutritionist Kiran Kukreja explained why we should never reheat these three things – tea, oil and spinach. She further added that reheating these things can lead to several diseases. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Rituja Ugalmugale, Internal Medicine, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mumbai Central, commented on the practice of reheating oil, tea and spinach and why it is harmful.

Reheating the Tea:
Loss of nutrientsReheating tea may degrade some antioxidants, such as catechins, especially in green tea.
formation of tannins: When tea is reheated, the concentration of tannins can increase, making it taste more bitter. Although tannins themselves aren’t harmful, excessive consumption of them can interfere with the absorption of certain nutrients, such as iron.

Reheating the oil:
formation of harmful compoundsReheating oils, especially oils high in polyunsaturated fats (such as vegetable oils), can create harmful compounds such as aldehydes and trans fats. These compounds are linked to an increased risk of cancer, heart disease, and other chronic diseases.
OxidationRepeatedly heating oils can cause them to oxidize, producing free radicals that can damage cells and cause inflammation and various diseases.
Reheating Spinach:
Nitrate conversionSpinach is high in nitrates, which can be converted to nitrites when reheated, especially after being stored for a period of time. Nitrites can further convert to nitrosamines, some of which are potentially carcinogenic.
Loss of nutrientsReheating spinach can destroy heat-sensitive nutrients, such as certain vitamins (e.g., vitamin C and folate).
