According to a new study, global male cancer cases are expected to rise by 84%, from 10.3 million in 2022 to 19 million by 2050. Cancer-related deaths in men are also projected to nearly double, rising 93% from 5.4 million in 2022 to 10.5 million in 2050.
Researchers analyzed 30 types of cancer using population data from 185 countries and territories to estimate cancer incidence and mortality rates in men by 2050. These results were shared in a study published in a journal associated with the American Cancer Society.
According to the study, cancer incidence and related mortality rates are higher among men than women, primarily due to women’s higher consumption of tobacco and alcohol.
They examined 30 types of cancer in 2022 and made projections for 2050. They also identified a lack of detailed global data on male cancer disparities by age and country.
Men are often exposed to harmful substances at work and are less active in getting cancer screenings. Research also shows that older men, especially those aged 65 and above, have lower survival rates than younger men.
This is due to factors such as late diagnosis, poor tolerance to treatment and financial barriers to health care.
Prostate cancer will increase by 136%
Researchers estimate that prostate cancer deaths will increase by 136% between 2022 and 2050. They attribute this increase to men getting older and living longer, which gives cancer more time to grow.
It is estimated that the number of deaths from skin cancer will increase by 2050. Bladder cancer is projected to become more common and deadly.
The biggest increase is projected to be in cases of mesothelioma, a rare and aggressive cancer that affects the lining of the lungs and other organs. It is expected to increase by 105% by 2022. This increase is linked to both an aging population and exposure to asbestos.
