Ever since humans first started looking up at the skies, thousands of questions about space, the universe, and galaxies have remained unanswered. The quest to find answers about the formation of the universe and understand its biggest mystery introduced humans to the wonders of space, including interacting galaxies, nebulae, moons, planets, and black holes. Space agencies like NASA keep sharing mesmerizing images from space for us to understand the universe better.

Two bulbous shapes shine in the center. Blue and purple hues of gas spread near the center, while fuchsia, red and pink hues surround the outer edges. Stars are scattered in the background.

Eta Carinae may be about to explode, but no one knows when. It could happen in the relatively near future, although (astronomically) it could be tens of millions of years away. With a mass about 100 times that of our Sun, Eta Carinae is an excellent candidate for a full-blown supernova, or explosion of a star.

This view of space is filled with bright green swirls. In the center, the glowing “heart” of the Crab Nebula can be seen. Stars are scattered across the sky as far as the eye can see.

The eerie glow of a dead star that exploded in a supernova long ago reveals itself in this @NASAHubble image of the Crab Nebula. But don’t be fooled: The eerie-looking object still has a pulse. Buried in the center is the star’s heart, which beats with rhythmic precision.

This light-year-long clump of interstellar gas and dust, which looks a bit like a caterpillar, is a newborn star – a protostar.

Stars form in large clouds of gas and dust called molecular clouds. These giant clouds cool and turn into clumps. Eventually, gravity causes some of these clumps to collapse. When this happens, the friction causes the material to heat up, eventually leading to the formation of a protostar.

Caldwell 69 is one of more than 100 objects in the Caldwell Catalogue: a list of galaxies, nebulae and other cosmic wonders that can be easily observed by amateur astronomers.

The fiery, dying star at its centre — which is blazing at temperatures of more than 450,000 degrees Fahrenheit (250,000 Celsius) — is blanketed by a blanket of icy hail.

A nebula shaped like a cat’s eye. At the center is a bright point of light. As you move outward from the center, dust bubbles appear; the centralmost one is blue. These spheres appear as concentric rings at the edges of the nebula, looking like the layers of an onion cut in half.

Planetary nebulae are a class of nebulae. They got this name because when they were first seen with telescopes, they looked like planets. However, planetary nebulae are the final stage of evolution of a star that is similar to our Sun.
