Can paracetamol affect the liver? Well, in an interview with ANI, Insta-popular gastroenterologist Dr Shiv Kumar Sarin said that one of the most common causes of liver failure in the United States and London is paracetamol poisoning. This is surprising because after Covid, paracetamol is being referred to as one of the most sought-after painkillers. However, Dr Shiv Kumar Sarin mentioned that 2-3 paracetamol tablets can be consumed in a day – half a tablet each time.
The liver is a vital organ in the human body, which ensures that all bodily functions are performed properly and on time. The liver is a small organ located on the right side of the abdomen, just below the ribs. The liver is essential in virtually most of the body’s functions – from digesting food to getting rid of toxins, to ensuring healthy blood circulation. Dr Shiv Kumar Sareen explains that the liver is the boss of the body as it keeps the body running and healthy.
How can diabetes occur?
Dr Shiv Kumar Sareen explained that contrary to what we believe, the body’s sugar is actually controlled by the pancreas. He explained how it works – the pancreas makes insulin which may be required by the liver. However, when the liver has a layer of fat, the insulin is not absorbed by the cells. Therefore, the pancreas needs to make more insulin for the same task. Soon, due to fatty liver, the insulin is not absorbed by the cells. The pancreas starts getting tired of making more insulin. That’s when it gives up and diabetes occurs.

Dr. Shiv Kumar Sareen further explained that diabetes occurs in this way and it is important to know the outline of the body functions to understand how to cure diabetes. He further said that when we have diabetes, we do not need any other disease, because diabetes brings other diseases and ruins a healthy body. Therefore, the master of the body – the liver – must be healthy. And we must ensure that fatty liver diseases are treated properly.

Explaining how fatty liver disease develops, Dr Shiv Kumar Sarin said that when we consume too many calories – more than what the liver and muscles need – they get stored as fat in the liver bank. When fat is less than five per cent of the liver’s weight, it is considered healthy. Anything more than that is worrisome.
