NASA has released new images of Jupiter taken by the Juno spacecraft, showing turbulent clouds and cyclonic storms in the planet’s northern hemisphere from May 12, 2024.

Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system, has been explored by nine spacecraft – seven flybys and two orbiters, including Juno, which has been studying the planet since 2016.

Jupiter’s stormy atmosphere contains more than a dozen winds, with speeds reaching 335 mph (539 kph) at the equator. In addition, Jupiter has been observed to have a Great Red Spot for more than 300 years, a giant storm system more than twice the size of Earth.
Jupiter and the Aurora
The extraordinary flashes shown in the new observations are known as auroras. They are created when high-energy particles enter a planet’s atmosphere near its magnetic poles and collide with gas atoms.

Storms swirling on Jupiter
According to NASA, Jupiter’s zonal winds, moving in opposite directions, generate vortices of all sizes that manifest in swirling storms in the atmosphere. “Pop-up clouds” at the highest levels, small, bright clouds that accumulate along the edge of one of these fronts, are thought to be packets of air pushed up to the heights at which ammonia ice condenses.

Bands of Jupiter
Jupiter’s stripes are created by a cloud-forming “weather layer.” In this composite image, the leftmost image shows Jupiter’s thermal energy being emitted in infrared light, with the dark cloud stripes appearing as shadows against Jupiter’s thermal glow.

According to NASA, the image on the right shows Jupiter in visible light, with white cloudy “regions” and relatively cloud-free “belts” appearing reddish-brown.
