Janhvi Kapoor recently opened up about the challenges of period pain and how difficult it is for her physically and emotionally. In a recent interview, Janhvi opened up about the struggles she faces during menstruation. Janhvi revealed that she doesn’t feel much amid a busy schedule, but when she is at home, she experiences “paralyzing pain”. Janhvi revealed that there was a time when her nose would bleed during period pain.
In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Madhu Juneja, Director – Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Cloudnine Group of Hospitals, Pune, Kalyani Nagar, sheds light on this.
Dr Madhu Juneja said, “Nosebleeds during menstrual pain, also known as catamenial epistaxis, is a highly uncommon but notable phenomenon that may occur in some women. This phenomenon can be distressing and uncomfortable, but understanding the underlying causes and mechanisms can help in understanding this condition.”
The doctor further explained the reasons that cause nose bleeding during menstrual pain.

Hormonal fluctuations
The menstrual cycle is primarily controlled by the complex interaction of hormones called estrogen and progesterone. During menstruation, the levels of these hormones drop significantly, which can affect various parts of the body and blood vessels. Estrogen, in particular, helps maintain the integrity and elasticity of blood vessels. A sudden drop in estrogen levels can make blood vessels more fragile and this drop increases body fluids which can result in nosebleeds.
blood clotting process
Another possible factor is the effect of menstrual hormones on the underlying blood clotting mechanism. Some women experience changes in their blood’s ability to clot. Menstrual blood has anticoagulant properties to ensure smooth shedding of the uterine lining. These changes can sometimes increase the tendency for bleeding in other parts of the body, including the nose.

increased blood flow
Menstruation can cause an overall increase in blood flow and blood pressure, which can increase the risk of nosebleeds. The increase in blood flow is necessary to shed the uterine lining, but it can also affect the delicate blood vessels in the nasal passages.
Nasal congestion and allergies
Some women experience nasal congestion and allergies more intensely during the menstrual cycle due to hormonal changes. These conditions can dry out and irritate the nasal membranes, making them more likely to bleed.
stress and lifestyle factors
Stress can increase during menstruation and lead to lifestyle changes, such as changes in sleep patterns and eating habits. Stress can affect blood pressure and overall vascular health, which can increase the likelihood of nosebleeds.
